As of 2007, all professional dog walkers wishing to walk more than three dogs at one time must be licensed by the City of Toronto. To obtain this license, a dog walking business must show proof of insurance, and pay a $200 annual fee for the permit.
This licensing means the implementation of certain rules & regulations and subsequent consequences for violating them. Repeated violations could result in the revoking of a dog walker's permit.
It does not, however, impose any mandatory education or pet first aid certification.
Although the City of Toronto plans to direct the annual income generated from the licensing back into the dog parks, there is much debate in the dog walking community about this new policy, and many professionals strongly oppose it.
